Book Review: The Deepest Well by Nadine Burke Harris, MD

Book Review: The Deepest Well by Nadine Burke Harris, MD

Dr. Harris was working as a pediatrician on the forefront of recognizing a connection between traumatic events, Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), and a number of chronic health conditions in children and adults.  She partnered with other researchers and went on to advocate for universal screening for ACEs and referring them for supports to treat their trauma.  Her work has captured the attention of many professionals and has led to a better recognition of the role that trauma plays in development and health.

Reading this was validating for our team, in that it had research and data to support what we have known and seen in our clients.  Our favorite take away was the research-proven 6 most important things that support healing in people that have experienced toxic stress or trauma.  These are Sleep, Exercise, Nutrition, Mindfulness, Mental Health and Healthy Relationships. This book has also helped us think about the important questions to ask when we are meeting with families .
