Struggle, growth, and connection

Katie Couric interviewed Andy Grammer to see what helps him to stay so positive.  If you love podcasts, check out “Next Question” for this episode.

Andy wrote a song called “Wish you pain” because he understands that struggle makes you stronger.  He talks about how most happy songs are grounded in pain because it is all about choosing happiness in the midst of heartache and suffering.  In therapy, we call this acceptance of suffering.  We aren’t saying we want to suffer.  We are accepting that it is a part of living.  It is temporary and we can get through it.

The thing that helps Andy feel better is helping others.   Benefits of helping others include helping us live longer, makes us happy, helps with chronic pain, lowers blood pressure, promotes positive behavior in teens and gives us a sense of purpose and satisfaction.  We are wired for connection and we regulate our emotions through our relationships with others.

If you are struggling, try to remember you are growing.   Try to connect with others and, if you are able, help someone else out.  It’s a win-win.
